Recycled Handspun Silk Yarn
Bright and cheerful, our
fairly traded hand spun recycled silk sari yarn is made by a women's
collective group in Nepal (see
photos).
This group, the Nepali Women Empowerment Group assists women through
finding items to produce. We carry six different qualities and styles of our recycled silk yarns
with significant quantity discounts (jump to our
selections).
A significant portion of the
retail price goes to the women spinners and or goes to support
assistance programs including educational grants to the weaver's
children. Called "rangy changy" by our ladies, which
translates as colorful, this recycled silk yarn is
homespun, allowing the ladies to
go about their daily chores and watch the children. Made by
women in remote areas of Nepal. This Himalaya
Yarn from Kathmandu, Nepal is perfect for knitters and crotcheters
looking for something fun and different.
Recycled Silk yarn from remnants and
scraps of contemporarily-produced Indian saris, this colorful yarn is
100% silk and silk remnants and makes vibrantly hued scarves, hats,
mittens and other items! While it is called "recycled" the yarn
is actually made of unused silk fibers left over after making saris -
the raw material is NOT used or recycled saris! Often called Himalaya or Himalayan Yarn,
Nepalese Yarn, Kathmandu Yarn, Rungy Chungy Yarn, or Tibetan Yarn,
this recycled silk yarn is soft and fun to work with!

Our
Himalayan recycled silk yarn colors are spun together in a complex
manner, no two skeins are exactly alike. At this time, 100% silk
solid color yarn is difficult to obtain. Those selling solid
color "recycled silk yarn" are most likely selling yarns that actually
have no silk in them! Its light to bulky weight
knits up great on size 7 or larger needles. Not over spun like
some natural yarns, many people say this is the best recycled yarns
they've tried. If you would like us to match two or more skeins,
just let us know and we will attempt to do so; be aware that each
skein is completely different work of textile artistry. Because
recycled silk yarn is handspun, each skein varies in its color, gauge,
twist and texture. The best grades are lighter in weight and
have smaller gauge.
NOT ALL RECYCLED YARNS ARE ALIKE:
We carry several grades of recycled yarn: Most are 100% silk,
unless otherwise noted. However, many other sellers online
actually sell lower-grade yarns that have 30% or less silk (and some
that contain no silk whatsoever!) and are made up of mostly rayon,
nylon or cotton fibers. We no longer offer balls - only skeins,
as we've found that the consistency of skeins is better (sometimes
balls would have high quality yarn on the outside and lower quality on
the inside!!)
We GUARANTEE the quality and content of our
yarns.

OUR SELECTION OF
RECYCLED SILK YARNS:
please note:
yarns are sold by weight, some skeins are
100g and some are 200g |

You can also make requests for specific colors and we'll do our best to
select the closest match from our inventory (we usually have anywhere from
500 to 1000 skeins in stock). While our selection of colors is random, and
mostly falls into the reds, fuchsia, and pinks and purples category, with
some having other colors such as blues and greens and rarely, yellows or
golds; you can select secondary colors such as mostly
reds, red with some blues, red with some yellows, reds with oranges,
reddish-purples, purples, greens, pinks, yellows, oranges, wild colors and
just about any other color combination you can imagine! MOST yarn (90%
plus) is primarily red, fuchsia, purples and maroons. PLEASE
take
this into consideration when ordering. Please make a
first and second request in the notes field at checkout! Please
be specific when requesting colors (i.e. light pink versus dark
pink) and include any colors you really don't want (i.e. 'I only want reds
with blues but without greens'). If you would like a consistent look
to your project, let us know and we can try and match the skeins you
order. If you want a WILD pattern, let us know and we'll send you an
assortment.
Please note: Since this yarn is made from recycled materials, the
colors are not true (i.e. a blue skein might contain 20-70% blue fibers
but not 100% of the same color threads throughout. It will be quite mixed
- but that's part of the fun!)
We also have matching scarves, hats, gloves & mittens and purses (coming
soon!)
SHIPPING CHARGES: Our system isn't entirely accurate in quoting
accurate shipping rates.. typically your shipping cost via USPS will be
around $4.50 for up to 10 200g skeins. With the US Postal service we
can now ship up to 30 or so (+/-) 200g skeins for the low price of around $9.50!
We will only charge you the exact shipping charges.
If you're paying by credit card we'll adjust the shipping and only charge
you what it costs us. If you're paying by Paypal we'll refund any excess
shipping paid. Thanks in advance for your consideration!
A NOTE TO INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: We only ship via US PRIORITY GLOBAL MAIL -
it is only a few dollars more than airmail (which takes up to 3 weeks) and
is usually delivered in 3-5 days. We DO NOT ship ground (which can take 2
- 5 months and is NOT much cheaper than airmail). Regrettably, shipping
International is VERY EXPENSIVE - please contact us for a quote. Also
note: we MUST declare the full price of the yarn on the customs forms so
you will most likely have to pay taxes and or duty. Thank you for
understanding!
Quantity and Wholesale requests: Minimum quantities/and or minimum opening
order required! Please call Scott at: (916) 443-2057.
*There is a distinct smell to ALL recycled silk yarn. Typically, the
higher the grade of yarn, the less the initial smell (ie our Lhasa yarn
has almost no desernable odor). Smell any silk
garment and you will find a similar scent. This scent tends to fade once
it is knitted into something.
