Zanzibar Trading Company - Sacramento's Fair Trade Store & Gallery

Sacramento's World Import, Tribal Art, Jewelry & Fair Trade Store & Gallery

"We bring the World to Sacramento!"

offering items from over 110 countries

Purveyors of Museum Quality Imports & Handicrafts

Welcome to the name sake island (Zanzibar) which for centuries stood as a bastion of commerce and culture, a trading crossroads to half the known world.  Welcome, to Zanzibar Trading Company & Zanzibar Tribal Art Gallery located in Sacramento, California.  Why did we name our store Zanzibar? Click here to find out!  This website is primarily an information website, to purchase online, visit www.Zanzibar-Trading.com OR CALL OUR GALLERY AND WE CAN EMAIL YOU PICTURES OF SELECT ITEMS.  Please note that NOT all items shown on this website may be available for purchase and items shown on this website are merely a very small sampling/examples of what we carry.

Sacramento's Largest Selection of Fairly Traded Gifts!

SHOP LOCAL & SUPPORT SMALL, INDEPENDENT STORES LIKE OURS!  WE SINCERELY APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT!!

Here at Zanzibar Trading Company, we traverse the world over to bring back to our clientele fantastic finds in fairly traded native handicrafts, tribal artifacts, African and Asian art, the finest sterling silver and semi-precious stone jewelry and exotic elements for your home and gift giving.

Visiting our store is like visiting a museum - without having to pay an entrance fee!

Our basic philosophy:  Better, not cheaper, for the good of all people and the planet.  We're not your typical import store - we do carry handicraft but we also carry many world-class museum quality pieces of artwork from famous, published artisans, as well.  Zanzibar values its long term relationships that we have developed with our artisan friends in over 100 countries throughout the years.

We have always preferred to work directly with the artisans rather than go through traditional middle men and catalogs. We are exceptionally conscious of the exploitation that can occur with differing exchange values, but would like to stress that we believe in Fair Trade and a fair price paid for items.  As as a result of these values, we always pay our artists a good price for their work - thus enabling our artisans and their families to have a good standard of living.

So come in, browse and ask us what something is - where it comes from - or who made it!  You'll be surprised at just how much stuff we fit (neatly) into our little store!

Zanzibar is dedicated to only carrying sustainably produced and fairly traded items.  To learn more, visit our pages on what is fair trade?

Located in the heart of midtown Sacramento, at the corner of 18th and L Streets, Zanzibar's retail gallery offers over 9,000 fairly traded items from over 100 countries!...only a fraction of which is online.

We particularly pride ourselves in our dedication to authenticity, fair trade, and the very highest quality merchandise possible.  From Africa to India, Papua New Guinea to Peru, Mexico to Thailand, our gallery offers a virtual market bazaar.  All of our pieces are hand-picked, with as many purchased directly from the artisans as possible.  No child labor, no factory produced pieces - ever!

PLEASE NOTE:  This is primarily an INFORMATIONAL WEBSITE.  This is NOT a comprehensive catalog of what we carry - some of these items will be available, others not.  If you see something you like you can call us and we'll let you know if it is available or if other similar items are available.  We can, as time allows, email you pictures.  As we are a retail store all items are subject to prior sale.  If you call, please avoid calling during weekends and lunch times (our busy times).

Broken Bangle Boxes

Every woman in Northern India has dozens or hundreds of hand-blown glass bangle bracelets.  They are beautiful - but fragile, and often crack or break.

Our cooperative literally goes door-to-door, village-to-village and either trades new bangles for damaged ones or buys them outright.  A women's cooperative then uses plyers to break up the bangles and glue them to sustainably made fine quality wooden boxes!  Beautiful and unique, each box is a one-of-a-kind work of art inspired by designs by a famous East Indian artist who covered rock gardens and statues with Bangles.

MOLINILLOS - Mexican Chocolate Whisk/Stirrer

The molinillo [moh-lee-NEE-yoh] is the Mexican chocolate "whisk" or "stirrer". It is made of "turned" wood and it is used to froth warm drinks such as hot chocolate, Atole, and Champurrado.  These tools were actually invented by the Spaniard colonists in Mexico in the early 1700's. Prior to the invention of the molinillo, chocolate was froth by pouring it from one cup to another. The first molinillos were made to fit into a container with the handle extending out of the top. The molinillo was then rotated between the users two hands placed palm-sides together. The twisting motion frothed the chocolate.

Turkish Pottery Bowls & Dishes

These beautiful dishes, bowls and platters are high fired and are exuberantly decorated with hyacinths, tulips, carnations, roses, evil eyes (talismans for protection and good luck), stylized floral scrollwork known as hatayi, Chinese clouds, imbrication, cintemani (a design consisting of three spots and pairs of flickering stripes), and geometric patterns.

They are lead free and dishwasher and oven safe, however, we would highly recommend hand washing. Beautiful and functional, each piece is a unique, one-of-a-kind work of art!

Ming / Ching Pottery Sherd Pill Boxes

These beautiful one-of-a-kind pill boxes feature a small sherd of broken Chinese Ming or Ching Dynasty pottery surrounded by embossed white metal. These pieces are guaranteed to be antique porcelain, having been made from 300 - 660+ years ago during either the Ming or Ching Dynasties circa - 1644 A.C.E (After Common Era).

During the Chinese cultural revolution under Mao Zedong from 1966-1976, millions of artifacts were ordered destroyed, including pottery and other items associated with “bourgeois values”. Porcelain, statuary, musical instruments and other precious antiques were all lost during this time so that they would not "pollute" the populace, as they were considered frivolous.

Cloisonné Dishes, bowls, vases and bangles

Cloisonné, an ancient metalworking technique, is a multi-step process. It was developed in the Near East and spread to the Byzantine Empire and from there along the Silk Road to China. Small ribbons of copper are meticulously soldered to form flowers and other shapes on a copper background. These sections are then filled with a paste of powdered colored glass that is then fired, producing the amazing variety of colors, shapes and patterns on these wonderful jewelry pieces, bowls, dishes and vases.  Each one is a true work of art taking many hours to complete. 100% handcrafted. Fairly Traded. Master artisan quality.

__________________________________________

Chulucanas Pottery from Peru

This unique hand made (not molded) pottery and figures  is pit fired - using simple glazes; but the true beauty comes from the rich, coffee/chocolate brown patina which is achieved by firing the piece with green mango leaves which leaves a deep, dark brown/black patina on the unglazed portions.  Truly unique.. and affordable!

Hand block printed Silk Scarves from India

The art of printing fabric using hand carved wooden print blocks in India, is unfortunately, nearing its artistic end.  Modern web presses and silk screening has replaced this ancient art.  These unique, each one hand printed silk scarves recall an earlier time when the intricate process of using up to six different wood block stamps are used to create these one of a kind beauties!

After several months of not being able to source our popular beaded wire bracelets made by a Maasai women's cooperative, we've finally received a shipment.  Bold, colorful hand blown Czech glass beads are beaded onto wires for these fun cuffs.  We also have beaded bangles and "elephant hair bracelets" (made from grass - NOT elephant hair!!).

Sustainable handicrafts such as these allow the Maasai to maintain a migratory lifestyle, following the rains with their animals and allows them some income in order to keep them from settling into reserves as the Kenyan government wishes.

FEATURED PRODUCT

Recovered Olivewood Salt Pots

Carved from olive wood stumps dug up in field preparation, these small bowls with a spoon are hand carved in Central Kenya by the workers in the field for extra income. The shape of each salt pot is unique.  Kahero Farm is just about 10 miles north of the Equator in the Great Rift Valley. It was a forest many years ago where people cut down trees for firewood and charcoal. The new owners of the farm saved the brown olive (olea africana) stumps of trees that were cut down decades earlier and taught the local herdsmen to carve bowls and spoons from the aged wood. No two bowls are alike. Every bowl is made according to the grain in the wood. The only power tool is a chain saw used to cut the stumps into workable pieces.

After that, the carvers use machetes, chisels, and other homemade tools, some made from old harrow disks. The bowls are finished with broken glass bottles and sand paper and are then dipped in liquid paraffin, which protects the beauty of the wood. There is no carving workshop on Kahero Farms. The work is done where the herdsman sits chipping away while watching the sheep and cattle in the field. The herdsmen are paid a fair price for the pieces they create.

 MICRO LOAN PROGRAMS

Here at Zanzibar, we work with dozens of small, family run businesses, cooperatives, women's groups and individuals in third world countries.

One of the projects we have promoted is the use of "micro loans" - small loans (sometimes just a few hundred dollars) that we advance or distribute to artisans, interest free. We currently have a 99.7% payback rate.  Currently, we underwrite all of our loans in house, however we've had many clients ask "how can I help?"  Well, besides buying fairly traded products and handicrafts from our store, There's a way you can help:

KIVA is an internet non-profit group that allows you to make loans (as little as $25) to the struggling, third-world business of your choice - it's NOT a donation - it's a loan and you will be paid back! ... and you can take the money back or reinvest it into another business. Check out their site!

Why did we name our gallery Zanzibar?

Good question.  Zanzibar is actually an island off the east coast of Africa and the country of Tanzania which it is officially a part of.  Today Zanzibar (and its northern island neighbor, Pemba) are known for tourism and beaches as well as its old stone town.

For thousands of years Zanzibar has been a trading center for spices, wood, dried fish, salt - just about everything you can imagine.  Arabs, Persians, West Indians, Chinese and even Europeans (Portuguese especially) have traded here for hundreds of years.  While the spices, especially cloves, were locally grown, most of the other items traded for were from other places.  The coastal Swahili language, in part a trading language, evolved here.

Thus Zanzibar was more of a trading Mecca - where one could find things from many different lands - thus we named our gallery Zanzibar since we currently have items from over 100 different countries (and while we have stuff from Tanzania, we don't actually have anything from Zanzibar!)
