finished product and we feel our stands are the best offered online.

Types of Mask Stands:

Just about any mask can be placed onto a stand, however the most common styles of mask stands include:  "Y" stands, "T" stands, Fork stands and Helmet or Hat Stands.  Rod stands (which require a hole to be drilled into the mask can also be used).

Custom steel Y mask stand for an African mask   "Y" STANDS

This is the most common type of stand for African masks.  A rod comes up from the flat base and breaks into a "V" or "Y" shape with thinner spokes that usually fit into holes on the side of the mask (these holes are usually for the attachment of the mask to the costume or for raffia/grasses/hemp).

The size (dimensions, thickness and material) of the base, placement of the rod, length (height) of the rod, angle and length of the bend, length of the spokes, distance between the spoke and type and length of the tabs vary from stand to stand and can be altered to fit just about any mask that has holes on the side.  There is a moderate amount of "play" with the spokes and you can usually fine tune the exact angle of the mask by bending these carefully.

    ROD STANDS

Rod stands essentially have a base that has a single rod coming up and this rod is seated into a hole drilled into the mask.  While this is the quickest and easiest way to place most masks on a stand, it is not the preferred method.  While many people have no problem drilling masks, we PREFER not to drill or damage a mask unless it is absolutely necessary to create a stand for it or the mask is simply a decorative piece and not a true ethnographic mask.

    "T" STANDS

These stands are basically similar to the rod stands (and can be used as a rod stand), but they have a small cross bar near the top.  This cross bar allows masks that have strings or attachments to be displayed by wrapping the strings/attachments around the "T" at the top of the stand and allowing the mask to hang from the stand.

    FORK STANDS

Fork stands are essentially modified Rod stands that have two or more prongs or a "fork" at the top that fit into the holes of a mask.  Essentially its like a "Y" stand, but instead of the spokes fitting into the holes on the side of the mask, the prongs fit through holes at the very top of the mask.

    HELMET & HAT MASK STANDS

Helmet and or hat (crown) mask stands are versatile and can accommodate MOST helmet masks, beaded crowns, full-head costume heads, hats and other hollow items.  They can also be used as riser to sit objects upon.  They have a base, a rod and a top (either circular or octagonal) and can be made in any height to accommodate raffia, beads and other items hanging down from the piece(s).

ORDERING CUSTOM MADE STANDS

It is usually BEST to actually have the actual piece in hand for our stand maker, however this is NOT REQUIRED to have a custom stand made.

If you're in Sacramento

If you are local in the greater Sacramento area, you can bring your mask(s) in and we'll give you a receipt for them. have our stand maker make the stand and you can pick them up.

If you live outside the greater Sacramento area

If you live out of the area, you can also ship us your masks postage paid (please pack your items well as we cannot be responsible for damage to masks damaged in shipment).  We'll ship your mask and stand(s) back to you separately.

You can also submit to us via FAX or EMAIL detailed drawings and measurements (and photos, too) of your mask and and we can create a custom stand for your piece from these details.

Our stand maker is very adept at creating fantastic stands with the correct measurements.  The more information we have to work with, the more likely the stand will fit your mask.  Once we've received your details, including what materials and size(s) you would like, we'll contact you about price(s).  Materials, finish and complexity of the stand will determine its price.  Obviously, the larger the materials (ie a 1/2" base vs a 1/4" steel base) the more expensive the stand will be.
